The CORK Youth Track program is for grades 3-8 and does not require experience to join. Our goal is for kids to have fun, learn about track and field, and how to train properly. All practices and meets are optional. This year the CORK Youth Track Season will have a focus on the running events from 400m to 3000m. Participants will receive coaching for how to train, running form, nutrition guidance, starting, pacing, warming up, workouts, stretching, etc.
We get many questions when an athletes age is borderline whether they can participate, but we'll let you ultimately decide with the following information:
-We currently have about 50 kids signed up and 3 of them are 8 years old and quite a few are 9.
-Bathrooms are about a quarter mile away, and we don't have enough staff to escort those who need help to the nearest porta-potty with some exceptions.
-We run 2-3 miles per practice so we ask that younger runners should enjoy the sport no matter their ability. The volume of work has occasionally been tough for younger runners who aren’t used to running.
So the question isn't whether they can join—the answer is absolutely yes—but whether your athlete is mature enough to get the most out of it and have an enjoyable experience.
